Engraved vs Printed House Signs — What’s the Difference?
Search for house signs online and you’ll find everything from £5 printed plastic signs to handcrafted engraved slate plaques. The price difference is obvious. The reason for it isn’t always explained. Here’s what actually separates an engraved sign from a printed one — and why it matters outdoors.
How Printed House Signs Are Made
Printed signs are made by applying a design to the surface of a material — usually acrylic, plastic or a thin composite board. The lettering is either digitally printed (like a sticker) or UV-printed directly onto the surface. Some cheaper signs use vinyl lettering applied on top.
The result looks fine when it’s new. The problem is that everything sits on the surface, exposed to sunlight, rain and temperature change. UV fading, peeling edges and cracking are common within 2–3 years outdoors, particularly in exposed positions.
How Engraved House Signs Are Made
An engraved sign has its lettering physically cut into the material. On our slate signs, we use deep V-carve engraving — a CNC router with a V-shaped bit cuts 3–5mm into the stone. The paint is then applied inside the groove, protected from direct weathering by the material on either side.
Because the lettering is part of the sign rather than on it, it can’t peel, fade in the same way, or be damaged by surface wear. The engraving itself is permanent.

The Practical Difference
| Printed sign | Deep engraved sign | |
|---|---|---|
| Lettering | On the surface | Cut into the material |
| UV resistance | Fades over time | Paint protected in groove |
| Typical lifespan | 2–5 years | 20+ years |
| Material | Usually acrylic or plastic | Slate, Corian or stone |
| Feel | Flat, uniform | Tactile, three-dimensional |
Is a Printed Sign Ever Worth It?
For a temporary sign — during building work, or while you wait for a permanent sign to arrive — a cheap printed sign does the job. For anything intended to stay on the exterior of your home for more than a couple of years, an engraved sign on a proper outdoor material is the better investment.
The cost difference is real but not dramatic. Our engraved slate signs currently start from £19.99 — not much more than many printed alternatives, and they’ll still be looking good in 20 years.
