How to Maintain a Marble Composite Resin House Sign

Our oval, rectangular, bridge top and rustic house signs are hand-cast from marble composite resin — a dense, weather-resistant material that’s designed to be left outdoors year-round. They need very little maintenance, but occasional cleaning keeps them looking their best. Here’s all you need to know.

How Often Should You Clean It?

Once or twice a year is usually enough. The material is non-porous and doesn’t absorb dirt, but dust, algae and general outdoor grime can build up on the surface over time, particularly in sheltered or damp positions.

What You’ll Need

  • A soft cloth or soft-bristled brush
  • Warm water
  • A small amount of mild washing-up liquid (optional)

That’s it. No specialist cleaners needed.

How to Clean the Sign

  1. Remove loose debris. Wipe away any dust, cobwebs or loose dirt with a dry soft cloth.
  2. Wash with warm soapy water. Dampen a cloth with warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid, and gently wipe the surface.
  3. Clean the reflective lettering carefully. Use a soft cloth rather than a brush on the reflective lettering — gentle wiping is all that’s needed. Avoid abrasive materials which can dull the reflective surface.
  4. Rinse with clean water. Wipe with a clean damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
  5. Leave to dry naturally.

What to Avoid

  • Abrasive cleaners or scourers — will scratch the surface and dull the reflective lettering
  • Pressure washers — can damage the finish and reflective properties
  • Bleach or strong chemicals — can discolour the material and damage the reflective lettering
  • Wire brushes or metal tools — will scratch the surface

What About Algae or Green Staining?

In damp or shaded positions, a light green algae film can develop. A soft brush with warm soapy water removes it easily in most cases. For stubborn growth, a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) applied with a soft cloth works well — rinse thoroughly afterwards. Avoid proprietary algae killers containing bleach or strong acids.

Maintaining the Reflective Lettering

The reflective lettering on our marble composite resin signs is rated to maintain its reflectivity for 10+ years — the same specification used in UK road signs. Gentle cleaning as above will preserve the reflective surface. The main thing to avoid is anything abrasive that could scratch or dull it.

Our Guarantee

Our marble composite resin signs are backed by a 7-year guarantee against material defects. With basic care they’ll last considerably longer than that.
