How to Order a Personalised House Sign — A Step-by-Step Guide

Ordering a personalised house sign is simpler than you might think. Here's exactly how the process works at House Sign Shop, from choosing your sign to seeing it on your wall.

Step 1 — Choose Your Material

Start by deciding which material suits your property best:

• Slate — natural, traditional, deep V-carved engraving. Suits cottages, rural homes, and period properties.
• White Corian — contemporary, clean, UV stable. Suits modern homes and properties wanting a crisp white finish.
• Rustic reconstituted stone — reflective lettering for night visibility. Ideal for rural and unlit properties.
• Rectangular cast iron style — classic reflective finish in four colours. Suits traditional and period properties.
• Oval or bridge-top — Victorian styling for period homes and mews properties.

Step 2 — Choose Your Size

Select a size that fits your text and mounting location. As a guide, short house names (up to 10 characters) suit 300mm wide signs, while longer names or two lines of text need 400–450mm. Step 3 — Choose Your Font & Colour

We offer over 20 fonts ranging from traditional serif to contemporary sans-serif and rustic hand-carved styles. On slate signs, choose from white, gold, or black painted lettering. On Corian, choose from seven colour inlays. On reconstituted stone signs, lettering is white reflective as standard.

Step 4 — Enter Your Text

Type your house name, house number, or full address exactly as you want it to appear. Double-check spelling carefully — we engrave exactly what you enter. If you want two lines of text, indicate where the line break should fall.

Step 5 — Receive Your Free Design Proof

This is where House Sign Shop is different. Before we engrave a single letter, we email you a design proof showing exactly how your sign will look — your text, your font, your size, laid out to scale. You can request changes to font, spacing, or layout at no charge. We only start making your sign once you've approved the proof.

Step 6 — We Make & Dispatch Your Sign

Once approved, your sign is individually made in our Isle of Wight workshop and dispatched within our standard lead time. All signs are carefully packaged to arrive safely. Fixing screws are included.
