What Size House Sign Do I Need?

Choosing the right size house sign is one of the most important decisions you'll make — too small and it won't be readable from the road, too large and it can look out of proportion on your wall or gate. Here's our straightforward guide to getting the size right first time.

Door Numbers Only

If you just need a door number (1, 2, 42, 123 etc.), a compact sign works well. As a guide:

• 1–2 digits (e.g. "4" or "42") — 100mm to 160mm wide is plenty
• 3 digits (e.g. "123") — 160mm to 240mm wide
• 4+ digits or flat/apartment numbers (e.g. "123A") — 240mm to 300mm wide

For terraced houses and flats close to the pavement, smaller signs are perfectly readable. For properties set back from the road, go larger.

House Names

House names need more space, especially longer ones. The number of characters and whether you want one or two lines of text determines the size you need:

• Short names (up to 10 characters, e.g. "The Oaks") — 300mm x 75mm or 300mm x 100mm
• Medium names (10–18 characters, e.g. "Honeysuckle Cottage") — 400mm to 450mm wide
• Long names or two lines (e.g. "The Old Rectory" + road name) — 450mm x 150mm or 450mm x 200mm
• Full address plates (name + number + road) — 450mm x 200mm to 500mm x 300mm

How Far Away Will It Be Read From?

Think about where your sign will be mounted and how far away the nearest road or pavement is:

• Close to the road (under 5 metres) — standard sizes work well
• Set back 5–15 metres — go one size larger than you think you need
• Long driveway or rural property — choose the largest size available, and consider reflective lettering for night visibility

Gate Posts & Pillars

If mounting on a gate post or pillar, measure the flat face of the post first. Leave at least 20mm clearance on each side. Most standard gate posts suit signs between 200mm and 350mm wide.
