How the Tradition of House Naming Began
The custom of naming a home began with the English gentry, who named properties on their estates based on ownership or location — Eddington Manor, Eddington Lodge, Eddington Gate House. Tradesmen followed, naming their homes after their craft: The Forge, The Dairy, The Bakery, The Mill House, The Stables.
As the tradition spread, homeowners began choosing names based on their property's most cherished features: Rose Cottage, Three Oaks, Honeysuckle Cottage, The Willows, Holly Lodge, Primrose Cottage. Today, house naming draws inspiration from views, wildlife, memories and sentiment — Meadow View, Badgers Rest, The Old Barn, Haven, Serendipity.
House Numbering in the UK
Before 1765, British properties were identified only by name. As industrialisation brought people to cities, a new system was needed. An Act of Parliament introduced street numbering — odd numbers left, even numbers right, lowest closest to the town centre. Today, many homes carry both a number and a name, and a quality personalised house sign is the finishing touch that makes a property truly yours.
